Meet Dean Fitzpatrick, President of FFUN Group.

For this month’s Spotlight, we sat down with Dean Fitzpatrick, the newly appointed President of FFUN for an exclusive interview. With an impressive track record of success in the automotive sector, Dean brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role. Throughout his career, he has spearheaded ground-breaking initiatives, transforming companies and redefining industry standards. However, his accomplishments extend beyond the boardroom. Known for his passion for his family and for fostering a strong sense of community, we are thrilled to have him join FFUN. Join us as we delve into Dean’s vision for FFUN and learn more about the person behind the professional accolades.

1. Where are you originally from?

Dean is originally from the charming town of Butte, Montana. However, his family packed their bags and headed for Utah during his high school years where he finished his high school education and went on to attend the University of Utah.

2. What initially attracted you to this industry and led you to pursue a career in it?

Dean’s journey into the auto industry started right out of high school as a way to put himself through college. He discovered it was a fantastic opportunity and built a passion for the industry. After tossing his graduation cap into the air, he landed a job at the prestigious Larry H. Miller Group. From finance and insurance to managing new and used cars, Dean climbed the ladder of success. He was presented with an opportunity to operate a Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership near Salt Lake City. As fate would have it, more doors opened for him, and he became a Regional Supervisor while operating multiple dealerships. In 2012, he was presented the opportunity to oversee an entire automotive group. Over a decade, Dean witnessed tremendous growth, but life had its twists and turns. The Miller family, who owned the company, underwent a transition, and Dean gracefully helped with the change. Eventually, he found himself chatting with FFUN CEO Mark Loeppky in 2022, and since January, Dean has been proudly serving as an Advisor for FFUN.

3. Could you share a brief overview of your professional journey so far and highlight some of the key milestones or experiences that have shaped your career?

Dean’s journey in the auto industry began with just one Toyota store at LHM, but it quickly revved up from there. What attracted him was not just the business itself, but the owners who played a crucial role in its success. Over time, it became more than just cars; it was about creating opportunities for the company and its employees, just like Mark does. Dean believes in the importance of providing a career path for people and growing organically to create more resources and opportunities. Working together and taking responsibility, he finds it fun to be part of the drive and desire for growth. And let’s not forget the customers – their experience is always a priority.

4. How do you approach leadership and what values or principles guide your decision-making process?

Dean emphasized the importance of people. He believes in creating an environment where individuals can showcase their strengths and excel in their roles. Providing a clear vision and insights on how to achieve it is crucial. Working at a fantastic organization like FFUN, it’s all about the people and setting them up for success.

Dean values integrity and aims to leave a positive impact wherever he goes, making sure to leave things better than he found them. Being involved in community service is essential, as it allows the team to feel like they are making a difference. It’s not always just about making money. Dean embraces various elements to create a vibrant community and believes that being a part of something meaningful is essential to a fulfilling life.

5. Why are you excited to join the FFUN Group?

Dean’s excitement for joining FFUN starts with the people he sees within the group, united in their efforts to do the right thing. He appreciates Mark’s determination to keep the momentum going. The leadership team understands the game plan, even though perfection might be elusive at times, with everyone working for the right reasons, success is within reach. Dean knows the struggle firsthand and is ready to lend a hand in this exciting adventure.

6. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

When Dean is not leading the path to automotive success, you’ll find him fueling his family bonds— he has three grown children, a loving wife named Karen, and a handful of adorable grandkids. In addition to spending time with his family, you can (sometimes) find him on the golf course, meeting up with friends or enjoying outdoor adventures!

7. Is there something you are passionate about?

Dean admits that a big part of his life has been about work, but without a doubt, he is most passionate about his family.

8. Do you have a favourite ice cream flavour?

Dean doesn’t consider himself an ice cream aficionado, but if he had to choose, it would definitely be Rocky Road!

9. Do you have any pro tips for staying up to date on current automotive trends?

Dean’s pro tip for staying updated is to do lots of reading! He dives into industry publications, staying in the know. The auto world is a wild ride, always changing. It’s important to separate fact from fiction and be ready for anything, especially after COVID gave the industry a little nudge. Good leadership means explaining how the organization will handle the twists and turns. Dean is determined to stay relevant, no matter what the headlines say.

10. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done, and would you do it again?

It’s not so much adventurous, but nerve-rattling when Dean was once in a helicopter, attempting a daring landing on an Alaskan cliff. The blades came within a foot of the cliff’s edge. While he’s hopped back into a chopper since then, he won’t be signing up for a nerve-racking ride like that anytime soon.

11. What’s your favorite book or movie, and why does it resonate with you?

Dean may not have a favourite book or movie, but he enjoys keeping up with current events. He’s all about staying informed, diving into publications like the Wall Street Journal and staying on top of industry news.

12. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and what would you do there?

If Dean had the chance to jet off with anyone, he’d grab his family. Although he’s already explored many remarkable destinations, Ireland is still on the list. Out of all the places he’s been, if he had to choose a top spot, it’d be Hawaii, hands down!
